Got a green mark on your sidewalk in Troy?

The short answer

In Troy, a sidewalk or driveway approach marked in green paint is the property owner's to pay for, and the city mails a notice before its contractor is scheduled. You do not have to use the city's contractor: Troy says you may hire any licensed contractor, with a Building Department permit for anything over 50 square feet. Lemus can price it from a photo of the notice.

How it works in Troy

01

Read the mark

Green: the owner pays. Orange: the city pays and no notice is mailed.

02

Read the notice

It comes in the mail before the work is scheduled, with the cost if the city's contractor does it and a deadline to sign and return.

03

Choose

Sign and return it for the city's contractor, or hire any licensed contractor you choose.

04

Permit and inspection

Over 50 square feet needs a Building Department permit; Public Works inspects the finished work.

Why was my sidewalk marked?

Troy's Public Works department selects walks and approaches every year. The owner pays when a slab has a trip step of 3/4 inch or more, two or more cracks or cracks that have begun to separate, 25 percent or more surface deterioration, been raised by a tree on the owner's own property, or settled more than 1 1/2 inches and holds water.

The city pays for damage from trees in the right of way, from the construction of city utilities (not utility trench settlement), for the side-street walk on a corner lot other than at driveway crossings, and for intersection crosswalks and handicap ramps.

What does Troy ask of your own contractor?

6-sack concrete, a broom finish, curing compound after the pour, re-sodding where grass dies, expansion strips every 50 feet and at the back of the curb and front of the walk beside each approach, walks 4 inches thick and not less than 6 inches at a driveway crossing, and approaches 6 inches thick.

Can a marked slab just be leveled?

Troy permits leveling only if the concrete is not cracked, shattered or severely spalled. A cracked slab is replaced.
